F-Unit Friday

Todays #FunitFriday post shows Maine Eastern/Morristown & Erie FL9 #489, which was photographed by All Things Trains Chairman Phil Bell in Whippany, NJ on Christmas Day, 2016. The 489 was one 7 FL9s rebuilt by Morrison-Knudsen for Amtrak in the 1980s, which included the addition of Head-End Power to provide 480V electricity for the Amfleet and Heritage Fleet cars they would pull on the Lake Shore Limited and Empire Service trains that were their bailiwick until replacement by GE P32AC-DMs in the mid-1990s.

According to long-time EMD engineer Preston Cook, EMD had intended to build FL9s for Long-Distance service for the Union Pacific, though this would not have included the third-rail capability, and unfortunately this never became reality.
