NS Donates the First N&W SD40

On Monday (March 25th), the Norfolk Southern Railway announced the donation of EMD SD40 #1580, which was built in 1966 as the first of 45 of these units built for the Norfolk & Western. 1580 ran in road service for both the N&W and successor Norfolk Southern before being demoted to yard service as the once-ubiquitous six-axle EMD SD40 and SD40-2s were gradually superseded by newer models such as General Electric's C44-9W (D9-40CW in NS parlance) on these front line trains. After more than a decade of storage at the Juniata Locomotive Shop in Altoona, PA, #1580 will soon find her way to Roanoke, VA for preservation.
