Tentative Date for Baltimore Port Reopening

The Army Corps of Engineers expects to reopen the Ft. McHenry channel by late May, which would restore full access to the Port of Baltimore.

The Port is currently closed, with its primary rail carriers--CSX and Norfolk Southern--providing alternate services for freight moving to ports such as Philadelphia and Virginia. It remains to be seen how much, if any, is permanently diverted and if movements such as a dedicated Philadelphia-Baltimore train recently established by CSX remain following the Port's reopening.

The Port of Baltimore enjoys a substantial advantage by being closer to Midwest locales than competing locations such as New York and Virginia. It handles substantial Ro/Ro traffic, including automobiles, breakbulk, and commodities including coal.
