This Week's Cover Photo

If you are a fellow Robber Baron or have been visiting our website over the past year, you know we love pictures of trains. This week, to commemorate Easter, we shared the photo below from our 2024 North American Railroad Calendar. This photo was taken by our Chairman Phil Bell during a visit to the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer. This is one of America's most interesting rail museums, because its extensive rail collection shares space with parts of the Tar Heel State's air and highway history. This includes beautifully-restored autos and trucks, a simulator from Eastern Air Lines, and comprehensive coverage of Piedmont Airlines, which is a much-missed air carrier once based in North Carolina. Based in the former Southern Railway Spencer Shops (named for its first President, Samuel Spencer), the railroad collection is where the Museum shines. It includes a variety of iconic covered wagons such as Atlantic Coast Line E3A #501 and Southern Railway E8A #6900. Also on hand is a Seaboard Air Line Budd-built round end observation late of the Silver Meteor and high hood GP30s from both the N&W and the Southern. Visitors can enjoy traveling behind--and aboard--many of these railroading treasures as excursions are offered throughout the day which travel around the yard. As one of these excursions was preparing to depart, Phil was using his camera to get some shots of Southern FP7 #6133 and as it was the Easter season, the Museum had the Easter Bunny riding around in a restored North Carolina State Police car (think about getting pulled over by a police officer in a convertible...), which led to this shot, which was taken on Kodak Lumiere LPP. NCTM is definitely worth visiting, so plan your trip today!
