Western Maryland Scenic Railroad Expands

Following in the footsteps of the Naugatuck Railroad and the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad is leasing the former Georges Creek Railroad, which shut down in 2019 following the closure of a paper mill in Luke, MD which was the line's primary source of traffic. WMSR plans to provide freight and tourist service over the former Western Maryland Railway line, which is situated in Garrett County, MD. The new operation will connect with CSX's Thomas Subdivision, itself served from the former Baltimore & Ohio Mountain Subdivision, all of which is a product of the multi-decade rationalization of rail service in Maryland, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania.
